270,000 Syrians are entitled to bring their families to Germany

    Date of release: 2017/4/5

Some 270,000 Syrians in Germany are entitled to bring in family members, a number that could spark controversy over immigration less than six months before the general election, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Bild newspaper quoted a government document as saying that a total of 431,376 Syrians applied for asylum in Germany in 2015 and 2016 and said 26,7500 would be eligible to reunite with their families in Germany.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees or the Ministry of the Interior did not immediately respond to the request for comment on the report.
In 2016, the government decided to suspend family unification for two years for migrants who receive "sub-protection" - granted to persons who are not considered to have been persecuted individually but whose country faces persecution, war, torture or other inhuman treatment.
The Syrians are the largest group of asylum seekers in Germany and are increasingly receiving sub-protection instead of refugee status, meaning that they are only entitled to one year of residence but can be renewed.
But the parties to the governing coalition, the Christian Democrats of Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Social Union and the Social Democrats, last week decided to approve exemptions for people receiving sub-protection if they face difficult circumstances.
More than 1 million refugees poured into Germany in 2015 and 2016, but the number of arrivals declined significantly.
The impact of immigration was one of the main points of the alternative party for Germany, but the popularity of the party declined as the issue of immigrants no longer tops headlines ahead of the September 24 elections.
Polls show that the popularity of the Alternative Party for Germany is between 7 and 11 percent, higher than the 5 percent required to enter parliament.
