German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to conduct a "respectful dialogue" after the results of the referendum, which supported - slightly - the change of government in Turkey from parliamentary to presidential.
Merkel said in a brief joint statement with Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, "The German government is waiting for the Turkish government after a difficult campaign, seeking a dialogue of respect with all political forces and society," according to AFP.
"The Turkish people have been invited to vote for a change in the constitution of Turkey, the German government has followed the preliminary result of the referendum and respects the right of Turkish citizens to decide on the drafting of their constitution," the officials said.
The results of the referendum "show the depth of division in Turkish society, meaning that the Turkish leadership and President Erdogan himself a great responsibility."
