Agricultural statistics: Citrus production in Iraq does not meet the needs of the local market

    03/09/2017

The Directorate of Agricultural Statistics said on Sunday that the production of citrus in Iraq is close to 99 thousand tons during 2017, noting that production is not enough to meet the need of the local market, which compensates for the shortage through imports from neighboring countries.

The Directorate of the Central Organ said in a report that it "conducted a survey of the production of citrus in Iraq during 2017, which included five main types, namely orange, lemon, lemon, sweet lemon, lalinke and narang," noting that "citrus production in Iraq does not meet the needs of the local market, From neighboring countries. "

It added that "the total production of citrus trees for 2017 amounted to 98976 tons, an increase of 1.5% compared to the production last season, which was estimated 97543 tons," noting that "the orange crop came first with a production amount of 74774 tons, followed by the crop of the amount of 17025, The lemon crop was 3658 tons, followed by the yield of Lalanki in 2743 tons, followed by the lemon crop of 776 tons.

The Directorate continued that it "adopts in its annual plan to conduct a survey of the production of citrus annually to formulate a clear policy for decision-makers supporting the government to raise production levels to self-sufficiency," indicating that "the survey did not include the provinces of Anbar and Salahuddin because of the security situation in them, The survey also the Kurdistan region. "

It is noteworthy that the unstable security situation and the lack of government support led to the neglect of farmers to their orchards and the migration of some of them, which adversely affected the fruit production in Iraq. sf
