US President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed his desire to "give peace a chance for peace between Israel and the Palestinians before moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the occupied city of Jerusalem."

In an interview with Trump with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on the US TVN network, he said his administration was working on a plan to bring peace to the Palestinian Authority and Israel.

"I want to give this a chance before I think about moving the embassy to Jerusalem. If we can achieve peace, I think that will eventually bring peace to the Middle East, which should happen," he said.

Negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israel stalled in April 2014, after the latter refused to halt settlements, accept a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, and release prisoners from Israeli jails.

"We will make a decision in the not-too-distant future," Trump said, without elaborating on the decision.

On 1 June, Trump signed a temporary order to keep the US Embassy in Tel Aviv, and during his election campaign he wished to transfer it to occupied Jerusalem.

Congress passed a law in 1995 that makes the transfer of the embassy to Jerusalem a cornerstone of US policy, in symbolic support for declaring Israel the city of its capital as its eternal capital.

However, the law included an item that allowed each president to defer implementation of the decision every six months. Presidents of the Democratic and Republican parties have since postponed implementation of the resolution.
