Natural barriers to stop desertification in the country

As part of the intensive efforts made to combat desertification in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture has prepared ambitious strategic work programs in this regard, aiming to stabilize sand dunes and stop their encroachment on cities and main roads.
According to experts, desertification has negatively affected agriculture, as (20) percent of the country's area has been transformed into desert lands, amid warnings that if urgent measures are not taken in this regard, the desertification rate may reach (53) percent of the area in the future.
Director General of the Forestry and Combating Desertification Department in the Ministry, Dr. Bassam Kanaan Abdul Jabbar, told Al-Sabah: "His department has prepared several strategic work programs to combat desertification and are included in the government program," adding that "one of the programs in this regard in Al-Fajr District in Dhi Qar Governorate is to build trenches and earthen barriers with the aim of reducing the impact of sand dunes in the region."
He added that "the programs also include biological treatments, including planting drought-resistant tree species and low irrigation water on both sides of the expressway linking three governorates: Diwaniyah, Dhi Qar and Muthanna, and other similar programs for planting trees using drip irrigation systems to afforestation on both sides of the expressway as natural barriers and to stop the advance of sand dunes, in addition to planting dry cuttings during the month of February with the aim of stabilizing the dunes in Baiji district in Salah al-Din Governorate."
Abdul Jabbar explained that "the programs also include continuing forest projects, as the number of those prepared for government institutions and departments exceeded (500) thousand seedlings, in addition to other programs related to the propagation of (Balloonia) trees as effective barriers for dust storms in the department's stations." He stated that "his department will organize a campaign to propagate the seeds of medicinal and aromatic plants that have become extinct and work to preserve and plant them in stations within the governorates of Karbala, Najaf, and Anbar," stressing that "the aforementioned trees will act as effective windbreaks to protect cultivated fields from weather effects."
