Shafaq News/ A responsible source in the North Oil Company reported today, Wednesday, that a delegation from the British company "BP" arrived in Kirkuk Governorate to hold intensive meetings with the company's management with the aim of reaching a final formula to start developing the oil fields in the region.
On August 1, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sponsored the signing ceremony of a comprehensive oil memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Oil and BP to develop the Kirkuk fields.
On the Iraqi side, the agreement was signed by Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil Hayan Abdul-Ghani, while on the BP side, it was signed by CEO Murray Auchincloss.
The memorandum includes the rehabilitation and development of four oil fields in Kirkuk, namely: Kirkuk field with its two domes (Baba and Avana), Bai Hassan field, Jambur field, and Khabbaz field, with the possibility of agreeing on other fields. The government aims to optimally invest in the energy sector to increase and enhance oil and gas production, including solar energy.
The source explained to Shafaq News Agency that meetings were held today between the BP delegation and the Director General of the North Oil Company to discuss the final version of the agreement, which will include starting to develop the oil fields in Kirkuk. A meeting will also be held with Kirkuk Governor Ribwar Taha to discuss the ongoing developments.
The source pointed out that BP has submitted its initial plan, which includes conducting surveys and preparing oil wells in Kirkuk in preparation for handing them over to the British company.
The source also confirmed that the North Oil Company has begun developing an action plan to increase the production of oil fields in the region, indicating that the North Oil Company has completed a number of technical works, including connecting wells in the Bai Hassan field, developing a pipeline network in the Wavana field, and repairing damaged pipelines in the Shorao station. The drilling and reclamation plan has also been implemented, with dates set for completing the works within a short period of time.
In this context, economic expert Abbas Al-Ali confirmed that the contract with BP commits to increasing oil production in the oil fields in Kirkuk, which currently stands at about 325 thousand barrels per day, with the aim of raising production to 650 thousand barrels per day.
He added to Shafaq News Agency that the contract includes a three-dimensional seismic study of the field's reservoir, noting that estimates indicate that the Kirkuk field contains about nine billion barrels of extractable oil.
