The European powers will renew their support on Thursday for a nuclear deal with Iran, rejected by US President Donald Trump on the eve of an ultimatum for the US president to decide whether to reinstate the oil sanctions lifted under the deal, EU diplomats said on Wednesday.
During the meeting between Iran, Britain, France and Germany, called by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mugherini, the European powers that helped negotiate the deal in 2015 will assure Iran that it remains committed to it. According to the news agency "Reuters".
Diplomats told Russian news agency Sputnik that European powers would also urge Iran to continue cooperating with UN inspectors. Iran has always denied seeking nuclear weapons.
"The goal is to send a message to Washington that Iran is committed and that it is better to have a nuclear agreement than to isolate Iran," one diplomat said.
"The timing of the meeting is no accident ... this is a campaign we have been carrying out since October," a second diplomat said, referring to Trump's decision not to endorse Iran's compliance with the terms of the agreement, which prevents it from developing nuclear weapons.
A spokesman for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said the resumption of US sanctions against Iran would be a violation of the nuclear deal, adding that the Islamic Republic had the ability to significantly increase the pace of uranium enrichment.
Foreign ministers of Britain, Germany and France, as well as Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, are expected to meet Thursday morning with Mugereeni.
The meeting in Brussels on Tuesday is part of diplomatic efforts on both sides of the Atlantic ahead of deadlines for the agreement this month, including a deadline for a decision to reinstate oil sanctions suspended by the deal.
Trump must decide by mid-January if he will continue to suspend US sanctions on Iranian oil exports as stipulated in the deal.
