The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it was unaware of Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi's visit to Tehran on Wednesday.
The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement to the Iranian news agency Fars that he had not received any news or an official announcement about Abadi's visit to Tehran.
Earlier this week, an AFP correspondent reported that Abadi would visit Tehran and Ankara next week, two economic allies exposed to new US sanctions.
"The Prime Minister (Haider Abadi) will travel Tuesday to Turkey and Wednesday to Iran to discuss economic issues with the two countries," the official said.
Abadi said Tuesday that Iraq was forced to abide by US sanctions on Iran, although he did not "sympathize with" Iran, recalling that his country has suffered the international embargo for 12 years.
"We do not sympathize with the sanctions or interact with them because they are a strategic mistake, but we are committed to them," he said at his weekly press conference. "The sanctions are generally unjust and I have declared my position."
