Shafaq News / Foreign Minister, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, on Wednesday, Lebanon to return the Iraqi funds allocated to them, and deal with them according to the return.
Jaafari said during a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Gibran Bassil during his current visit to Lebanon that Iraq has complaints and demands about Iraqi funds monitored in Lebanon, expressing the hope that the Lebanese government will deal with them according to the return.
Jaafari added that "the circumstances experienced by Iraq during the nineties will not cancel his right to claim his money, and that his country will also hesitate to return any legal debt to Lebanese citizens towards Iraq, despite the circumstances surrounding him.
According to Lebanon's Minister of State for Combating Corruption, Nicola Tueni said that "these debts have been accumulating since Saddam Hussein's regime when Iraq was besieged and the United Nations established the oil-for-food program."
Jaafari's visit to Beirut will continue for three days, during which he will meet Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and a number of other leaders and officials, as well as reports of his meeting with Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.
