TEHRAN (Reuters) - The armed forces will intervene to protect Iran's oil tankers from any threat, a senior military official was quoted by the ISNA news agency as saying on Monday.
"The Iranian armed forces ... are ready today, as in the past, to protect our fleet of oil tankers against any threats so that they can continue to use sea waterways," IRNA quoted deputy military commander Mahmoud Mousavi as saying.
Washington re-imposed sanctions on Iranian oil exports on Monday, but granted exemptions to Tehran's top customers, allowing limited imports for the next 180 days. Iran's exports have fallen to 1 million barrels a day since the beginning of November, according to data from Rafinetiv, down from about three million bpd in mid-2018.
