    Iran's energy ministers pledged on Thursday to continue supplying Iraq with electricity and gas next summer. 
    "The Minister of Electricity, Luay Khatib, received at the Baghdad International Airport, the Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardkanyan, and the accompanying delegation, which is visiting Iraq to discuss the joint files in the field of energy." 
    The statement added that "the guest delegation held yesterday evening, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister for Energy, Minister of Oil Thamer Ghadhban, Minister of Electricity Loay Khatib, and the Governor of the Central Bank Ali Alalak, in which the files were presented between the two countries for the electric energy processed by Iran, Imported gas, and their debts, as well as the interconnect between the Iraqi and Iranian electricity system.     Iran's energy minister, Reza Erdkanian, has vowed to continue supplying electricity to Iraq next summer.

    (Reuters) - Iran's energy minister, Reza Erdkanian, has vowed to continue supplying electricity to Iraq next summer, as well as gas.
    Iraq's electricity ministry said in a statement on Thursday that Erdogan was visiting the country to discuss joint energy issues.
    A statement issued by the ministry said that the delegation held an important meeting on Wednesday evening in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister for Energy, Oil Minister Thamer Ghadhban, Minister of Electricity Loay Al Khatib and Central Bank Governor Dr. Ali Al-Alaq. , As well as imported gas, and their debts, as well as the interconnect between the Iraqi and Iranian electricity system.
    The United States extended 90 days to allow Iraq to import electricity from Iran, allowing Baghdad to bypass sanctions imposed by Washington over Tehran's nuclear program, a government source involved in the talks said on Thursday.
    On Nov. 5, Iraq was exempted from 45 days of US sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program and was supposed to devise a road map that would eliminate Baghdad's full reliance on Iranian electricity and gas.
    A power shortage that often leaves homes without electricity for up to 20 hours a day is a key factor behind weeks of major protests in Iraq during the summer.
    To overcome this shortfall, Iraq imports up to 28 million cubic meters of natural gas from Tehran to its factories and directly buys 1,300 megawatts of Iranian electricity.
    This dependence is uncomfortable for the United States, which sought to curtail Tehran's influence and re-impose sanctions on Iran's financial institutions, shipping lines, the energy sector and oil products.
