As tensions mount, US holds North Korean coal ship The US Justice Department has announced the detention of a large North Korean cargo ship that officials said violated the sanctions against Pyongyang by illegally shipping coal. The ship, previously confiscated by foreign naval authorities in April 2018, is currently in the possession of the United States and is approaching its territorial waters, a Justice Department official said. "This is the first seizure of a commercial vessel for violating international sanctions," Federal District Attorney Jeffrey Berman said in a statement. Berman accused Pyongyang of "exporting tons of coal" and imported heavy machinery by "hiding the origin" of the ship. The ship was seized after being detained by Indonesia last month and carrying more than 20 sailors.
