[size=18]The United Nations has warned of continued escalation of tension in the Gulf region between Iran and the United States, saying it could lead to catastrophic consequences.

In a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in response to a question about Saudi Arabia's "invitation" to the United States to launch attacks on Iran and the tension in the region: "We are deeply concerned about the instability of the situation and call on everyone to exercise maximum restraint, to prevent any escalation and to increase differences. We are concerned about the speech we are hearing."

"He is following this issue closely ... and several contacts have been made," Diugaric said, asking about the UN Secretary-General's involvement in efforts to resolve the situation, especially as it could turn into war.

"Our message and the message of the Secretary-General are the need to exercise restraint in both actions and rhetoric, and in such situations, misinterpretation of actions and rhetoric can emerge, which may have catastrophic consequences, which is very important," the UN official said.

"The Secretary-General's team is ready to mediate between the United States and Iran if they so desire," Dujarric said, reiterating that the United Nations is heavily involved in efforts to resolve tensions in the Gulf region.

The Gulf region is experiencing considerable tension because of the sharp escalation between Iran and the United States and its allies. Over the past few days, the Pentagon has stepped up its forces in the waters near the Iranian border, coinciding with the Islamic Republic's tightening of its military rhetoric towards "enemies."
