The United States deployed at least seven military vessels, led by the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, in the Persian Gulf and in the surrounding region, in the light of escalating tensions over Iran.
According to the USNI News website, the McFaul and Kearsarge, both of which are capable of carrying about 90 Tomahawk, have entered the destroyed Gulf waters.
"At the entrance to the Arabian Gulf, there is a Kearsarge landing boat that can carry between 20 and 30 aircraft and a helicopter, including the latest F-35B fighter jets.
According to the US Navy Press Office, the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying vessels are currently stationed near the Omani coast. The aircraft carrier could carry about 90 aircraft and a helicopter. Its accompanying vessels include the Leyte Gulf, the Spanish frigate Mendez Nunez and the destroyer Bainbridge.
The United States sent the Arlington transport and landing ship, which could carry 700 military personnel and 14 units of military equipment, to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet (based in Bahrain) and the Patriot system, media reported Saturday. The Pentagon said the weapons would be used by the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and the US military strike group in the Middle East in response to evidence of "Iran's high readiness to carry out offensive operations against US forces." The area of deployment of these ships is still confidential.
US President Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday he hoped to avoid a war with Iran.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has said that his country does not intend to engage in war with the United States, while noting that Tehran will continue to confront Washington's plans.
