[rtl]IRBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Iran has intervened to prevent the overthrow of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi amid protests that erupted weeks ago over the government's performance, according to informed political sources.
More recently, Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called on Abdul Mahdi to call early elections to calm the biggest public protests in Iraq. Sadr also urged his main rival, Hadi al-Amiri, who leads the Fatah alliance, to help oust Abdul Mahdi.
The Reuters news agency quoted five sources familiar with the events, that the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Qasem Soleimani intervened "in a secret meeting held in Baghdad on Wednesday" and asked Amiri and the leaders of the Popular Mobilization to continue to support Abdul Mahdi.
An Iranian security official confirmed Soleimani was present at Wednesday's meeting and said he was there to "advise".
A few days ago, Ameri, one of Iran's main allies in Iraq and secretary general of the Badr Organization, appeared to be ready to support Abdul Mahdi's departure.
Late on Tuesday, Ameri issued a public statement announcing his approval to work with Sadr, whom he had called to help topple the prime minister.
Wednesday's meeting appears to have changed course.
The leader of a Shi'ite group loyal to al-Amiri, one of the five sources with whom Reuters spoke about the meeting, said the trend was "to give Abdul Mahdi's government a deadline for reforms that will calm the street."
Another source familiar with the process said at the meeting that many PMU leaders expressed "fears that the overthrow of Abdul Mahdi would be a prelude to seeking to weaken the PMU."
A politician close to Sadr said the tone of Ameri's conversation with Sadr changed after the meeting with Soleimani.
In response, Sadr said publicly that if the resignation did not occur, more blood would be shed and he would not work with al-Amiri again.
"We will never enter into alliances with Ameri anymore," he said in a statement.
