Iraqi activists consider the issuance of the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence in Iraq the best step to protect women from violence, with the need to increase the number of safe havens to provide protection for battered women and girls.
Although the Iraqi Council of Ministers voted on August 4, 2020 on the draft law on protection from domestic violence, the law is still awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives, while there are only 5 “safe havens” for abused women, 3 of which are in the Kurdistan region and two others in Baghdad and Anbar.
Um Ghada (not her real name) is an Iraqi woman from Baghdad who went through the experience of safe havens through which she was able to protect herself and her children.
"I learned about the existence of sanctuaries and safe spaces by chance through a visit by a group of activists to our area", Umm Ghada told Rafaa Your Voice, during a symposium to confront domestic violence.
According to Umm Ghada, safe havens enable battered women "to obtain the necessary awareness and legal advice with the aim of removing injustice from us, as well as empowering us economically by learning handicrafts that help us provide daily sustenance for us and our children."
