Yesterday, Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture Muhammad Karim al-Khafaji announced the conclusion of the 36th session of the Baghdad Conference of the United Nations Food Organization (FAO), noting that Iraq had submitted an official request to meet with Iran and Turkey to discuss water quotas between the three countries.
Al-Khafaji considered, during a press conference, “the (FAO) conference is a historic achievement for Iraq and the Ministry of Agriculture after 50 years, as it is the first in the region and the Near East,” noting “the participation of the (FAO) Organization for Agriculture and Food in the United Nations, in addition to 30 countries present and virtual.” To discuss many issues, including changing ports and food security.”
"We asked the FAO to hold a joint meeting with Turkey and Iran to resolve the crises," Al-Khafaji said.
In turn, the Assistant Director of the (FAO) Regional Representative for the Near East, Abdul Hakim Al-Waer, said during the conference: "We are proud of the efforts of the Republic of Iraq and all officials, and we commend all the support from the Prime Ministry and the Foreign Ministry and the attention to the guests," noting that "the regional conference is considered the first in the region."
Al-Waer added, “Many important issues in the region were discussed during the conference, which represents the cornerstone and platform for the organization in the coming years,” noting that “many issues were raised regarding the participating countries.”
It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers from water scarcity as a result of lack of rain and low water revenues in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which affected the agricultural plan for the current season, which shrank to 50% from what it was during the last season.
