The most prominent thing that catches one’s attention, when one reads about the political situation in Iraq after the US invasion of the country and the Iranian incursion into it, especially in the last ten years, is the absolute identification of the men of the ruling class with the “Guardianship of the Jurist” regime in Iran, and the competition among them to serve it. One does not need much effort to discover that their implicit practical slogan is “Iran first,” but they practice “taqiyya” in concealing it for known purposes, as they claim their concern for and defense of Iraq, and this shocking gesture is not a form of illusion or exaggeration, for everything is in Mesopotamia It suggests that Baghdad is ruled from Tehran. The strongman of Iran who was assassinated by the Americans, Qassem Soleimani, had the authority to order and forbid Iraqi affairs, with the mandate of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In light of these abnormal conditions, Iraq, with its cities, waters and wealth, and we can say its people also, has become in the grip of Iran, serving its plans and projects in the region and the world. Iranian officials did not deny this reality, but rather they bragged about it, and they boasted several times that Baghdad had become one of the capitals of their empire. They have what they want, and as a result of that, Iraq turned into something like an Iranian state, into a state with an independent decision and effective sovereignty, but the ruling class seemed to ignore what was happening, and in most cases was satisfied and complicit.
Some believe that Muqtada al-Sadr himself may not be able to get rid of the Iranian grip for more than one reason
With the passage of time, the Iraqis felt that their country had been usurped, and that it was necessary to take a bold stand through which to restore their homeland. Thus began the demanded uprising and the protest movement that moved from one city to another, and turned into a massive revolution that wants to restore the homeland from its usurpers, and the voices of the revolutionaries rose that “Iran is out of it.” At that time, Tehran realized that it had become at the center of the storm, and that its ethnic sectarian project might be exposed to a major rift, if Iraq escaped from its grip, and it began to mobilize its militias and agents, and seeks to make them a center of power and influence through the use of the weapon of threat, disappearance and assassination on the one hand, and assimilation into gatherings Young activists, to divert their movement and seek to kidnap it from their hands.
But what is new these days tells us that the outcome of the parliamentary elections was not what the Iranian camp wanted, as it gave the majority the Sadrist movement and its leader Muqtada al-Sadr, who tried to distance himself from the ruling structure, and to pick up the thread with intelligence to be credited with, to call for a “national majority government, not an Eastern one.” Nor Western. This slogan, which means seeking to escape from the grip of Iran, met with a whim even among those who were, to a close extent, opposing the “Sadr movement,” although they still find in the vicissitudes and regressions of al-Sadr in the past what renews their fears that al-Sadr himself may not be able to get rid of Iranian fist for more than one reason.
The successor of Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, the commander of the Quds Force, Ismail Qaani, failed to achieve a breakthrough in the tense relationship of al-Sadr with the leader of the Dawa party, Nouri al-Maliki.
What is new these days also informs us that Soleimani’s successor in Iraq, the commander of the Quds Force, Ismail Qaani, failed to achieve a breakthrough in the relationship of al-Sadr with the leader of the Dawa party, Nouri al-Maliki, which has been marred by tension since the latter, in his first term as prime minister, led his jihadist “power” against Al-Sadr's followers with the aim of excluding them from the political arena and uniquely Iran's support for him and his party. Qaani’s mediation did not help in uniting the “Shiite House,” which is disputed in the background by a division between the loyalist movement and the current supporting Ali al-Sistani’s authority. A loyal personality to succeed him, which does not enjoy the blessing of Arab Shiite references.
In the midst of all these approaches and paradoxes, the slogan “Iran First” implicit in the hearts of the rulers of Baghdad seems to have lost its charm, and it may not be long before it falls and vanishes without regret!
