Today, Thursday, the Minister of Trade, Alaa Al- Jubouri
, announced the size of the marketed quantities of wheat during the current season, and while he explained the ministry’s plan to control prices and achieve balance in the market, he stressed that the emergency support law provided sufficient financial support to secure strategic storage.
Al-Jubouri told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the current marketing season for wheat is not over yet, and there is marketing in some provinces, but in very few percentages, and in other provinces at medium rates," noting that "the marketing has so far reached two million and 50 thousand tons, Emphasizing that Iraq needs to buy at least one million tons as a maximum need to meet the local need.
On direct sales, the minister said, "The General Company for Foodstuff Trading is making a great effort in this file and is continuing to sell flour and infant formula," noting that "there is a plan to add other materials with the aim of controlling prices and achieving balance in the market in a manner that serves the public interest." Determining profit margins in an economic and commercial way, in addition to the ministry’s return to practicing its real activity in achieving balance and controlling prices in the service of citizens.”
Regarding the ministry’s need in the financial budget for the current and next years, Al-Jubouri stressed, “The size of what was allocated in the last year’s 2021 budget to the ministry is not commensurate with the rise in food prices in the world and this must be taken into consideration in the budgets of the current year 2022 and the next 2023, and the reason is that there is a rise In food prices and wheat prices globally, which was certainly reflected in the funds needed to purchase these materials, and in return, the emergency support law that entered into force provided sufficient amounts for the ministry to secure strategic storage this year.
Regarding the provision of wheat, the minister explained, "There is cooperation in the matter of producing and providing wheat, because Iraq has not reached self-sufficiency due to the decrease in the size of the agricultural plan by half as a result of the irrigation plan due to water scarcity and the phenomena of climate change and a number of other variables, and all of these have greatly affected on the production of wheat this year,” stressing that “production of more than two million tons is a good indicator for this season.”
With regard to the issue of withholding the ration card, Al-Jubouri said, "This issue was issued by a Diwaniyah order by the Prime Minister's Office, and there are ongoing meetings in the Prime Minister's Office, the Council of Advisors and the Planning Department in the ministry," stressing "the continuation of the blocking operations in accordance with Resolution 105 of the Council of Ministers." .
He concluded by saying, "The ministry has embarked on an urgent plan to shift towards the electronic card," stressing that "
