    Economy News-Baghdad
The human rights expert, Dr. Fadel Al-Gharawi, confirmed, on Monday, that burning the gas associated with the extraction of oil in Iraq is the main factor in climate pollution, and poses an imminent threat to the lives and health of citizens, causing asthma, lung diseases, skin and cancer.
Al-Gharawi said in a statement, "The World Bank data indicates that Iraq burns more than 17 billion cubic meters of gas annually, ranking second after Russia. The resulting carbon dioxide emissions are equivalent to about 10% of total global emissions."
And he indicated that "Basra alone burns more gas than Saudi Arabia, China, India and Canada, because it is the home of the Rumaila oil field - the third largest oil field in the world" - warning that "Basra will be the highest province in the field of environmental pollution."
He called on the government and the Ministry of Oil to "obligate the oil companies operating in the licensing rounds to preserve the environment by preventing the burning of gas associated with oil, working to invest it and converting it into gaseous products for various uses, and the possibility of investing it in the needs of power stations for gas instead of importing it. And obligating the oil companies to provide compensation to the Citizens who have contracted cancer, skin and respiratory diseases, and direct compensation to Basra Governorate because of these dangerous pollutants.
