Czech Foreign Minister to discuss arms deliveries in Bagdad

    09/07/20140

Ministr zahraničních věcí Lubomír Zaorálek. ČTK Šimánek Vít The ammunition is to help the Kurdish militia in its fight against Islamists. Zaoralek said as this was an extraordinarily big delivery and an extraordinar situation, it was important to speak with those to whom this related. The delivery of the ammunition is so big that the U.S. aircraft is helping its transport, he added. The Kurds are to receive millions of cartridges for their Kalashnikovs and machines guns as well as hand grenades and bazooka ammunition, Zaoralek said. The delivery is worth over 40 million crowns, he added. The plan was supported by former foreign minister Karel Schwarzenberg (TOP 09). "If we have something at our disposal, we should deliver the arms to the Peshmergas, similarly to Germany. This is very reasonable," he added. On the other hand, the Czech Republic does not have the capabilities to intervene militarily in the region, Schwarzenberg said. Zaoralek said he had been waiting for the moment when the new Iraqi government would be formed that would be backed by the local parliament. "As it is still a single territory, including Kurdistan, I believe that it is important to discuss with the representatives in Bagdad and to exert a pressure on the creation of an inclusive government that will not repeat past political mistakes," Zaoralek said. He said commercial arms deliveries would be discussed, too.
Zaoralek said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken with him about the situation in Iraq and Czech-U.S. relations at the NATO summit.

"It has happened for the first time in history that we can see a terrorist group being transformed into a sort of state. This was here never before," he added.

"In the Middle East, the whole system established after World War Two has collapsed," Schwarzenberg said.

It is questionable whether the Syrian and Iraqi states will be maintained, he added.
