    His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received today, Sunday, January 22, 2023, at the Baghdad Palace, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, Ms. Rosemary Di Carlo, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, in the presence of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to The United Nations, Mr. Muhammad Hussein Muhammad Bahr al-Uloum, and the head of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abbas Kazem Obaid.
    During the meeting, they discussed the relations between Iraq and the United Nations through its mission and agencies operating in Iraq with their various specializations, where the importance of strengthening cooperation relations between the two sides was emphasized in a manner that enhances the achievement of the set goals.
    The President of the Republic confirmed that the long time that it took for the election period and the formation of the government had positive results through the formation of a government that represents the Iraqis.
    Mr. President spoke about the results of his visit to the Arab summit in Algeria and to the climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he sensed everyone's support and desire for Iraq to play its distinguished role that will help consolidate stability in the region.
    In this context, His Excellency spoke about the security and economic stability experienced by the cities of Iraq, referring to the steps taken by the government to remove military manifestations from within the cities, praising the security stability and development that he witnessed during his visit to the governorates of Basra and Mosul.
    His Excellency the President also referred to the relentless pursuit by the political parties to approve the budget and accelerate the realization of the government program in developing the health and housing sectors, and the completion of strategic projects to develop the infrastructure of Iraqi cities.
    His Excellency touched on the displaced, referring to their poor conditions and stressing the necessity of concerted efforts for the purpose of returning them to their areas of residence after providing the appropriate conditions and closing this file once and for all.
    Regarding the environmental challenges facing Iraq, like other countries in the world, the President of the Republic stressed the importance of taking effective measures that would reduce environmental pollution factors in the country. In the same context, His Excellency stressed the need to complete strategic projects that would address the issue of the water file and reach agreements with upstream countries to obtain a fair share of water. Regarding the relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, His Excellency stressed its continuous improvement and everyone's desire to reach solutions to outstanding issues in accordance with the law and the constitution and guarantee the rights of all Iraqis.
    For her part, Ms. Rosemary de Carlo renewed the United Nations support for Iraq in various fields, in a way that enhances security and stability in the country and achieves the aspirations of the Iraqis, and joint work in resolving the file of the displaced and other humanitarian issues.
    The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs referred to the special interest shown by the United Nations in Iraq for the purpose of helping it to face the challenges of climate change, and its full readiness to cooperate to reduce the risks of drought and water scarcity, stressing that the Secretary-General of the United Nations will create a position as an advisor on climate change and security in Iraq.
