The expert in economic affairs, Nabil Jabbar Al-Tamimi, warned today, Wednesday, of a food crisis in the Iraqi local market, during the coming days, considering that the government is in a dilemma between two options, the first is to leave the irregular transfers that finance food imports, or to prevent them and thus stop them. import these goods.
Al-Tamimi told "Baghdad Today" that "it is expected that the Iraqi local market will face, during the next few days, a crisis in foodstuffs, especially agricultural materials such as vegetables and fruits, and this crisis is due to the continuing crisis of remittances and the failure of importers to adapt to it."
He added that the government apparatus is in a dilemma, as it has two options: either leave the arena in front of the exchange and remittance offices to pass their remittances outside the banking system (smuggling) and (black remittances), which in turn hinders the Central Bank's efforts to adopt the new system (the platform), and keeps the price margin between the price The formal and parallel are very large.
Or the second option, which is represented by putting pressure on remittance and exchange offices, controlling currency smugglers, limiting the flow of irregular traders’ remittances, and thus disrupting the entry of goods and facing the crisis of scarcity of goods in the markets.
And the expert in economic affairs stated that "the Central Bank did not address the specificity of (small transfers below 50,000 dollars), the urgent nature of materials, especially vegetables and fruits, and how to pass them to exporters in Iran, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan as part of its issuance of the bank's recent controls, which heralds a food crisis in the market."
