Waste in Iraq...a neglected wealth that lacks investment
Iraq produces 20 million tons of waste per day, while the Baghdad Municipality alone secretes 9,000 tons per day. These quantities are a huge wealth awaiting investment by recycling them to produce new usable materials, while preserving the environment and providing job opportunities for the unemployed.
Recyclable materials are metals such as iron, aluminum, steel, plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, car tires and textile materials. Waste water can also be recycled.
Electronic materials are also recyclable. According to the United Nations, 41 million tons of electronic waste were dumped in landfills in 2014, and about one-sixth of electronic waste was properly recycled in 2014.
Countries began to resort to waste recycling in light of the successive industrial and technological development, but in Iraq there is still reliance on traditional methods of disposal only without benefiting from them.
Waste covers large areas in various Iraqi governorates, which makes it vulnerable to burning by citizens to get rid of it and the unpleasant odors emanating from it, which causes toxic fumes to rise in those areas, and thus causes suffocation among the population.
Although Iraq is considered the country most at risk of environmental pollution due to the remnants resulting from wars and the waste that is spread in city centers, districts, suburbs, and even in villages and rural areas.
That is why Iraq is one of the strangest countries in terms of dealing with waste, not only because it is harmful to nature and the environment, but also because it is a huge wealth that has not yet been invested, according to environmental expert Ahmed Salih.
neglected enormous wealth
And Saleh asserts, “We must not look at waste as harmful waste only, or how it can be disposed of, but rather as a huge wealth and an economic door on which many countries of the world rely, which make energy from their waste, because decomposition produces methane and other gases that It can be used to produce new materials.”
He adds, “For example, the sugar factory used to produce buckwheat, and the sugar cane waste went to the paper mill, and the pitmus was used as an alternative soil, and the waste from the plastic factory was used to make well-recycled bilateral tools, given that it was recycled once.”
And Saleh continues, “As well as the waste of dates, from which vinegar, jams, etc. are made, and the waste of carpentry, from which doors and pressed wooden panels are made.”
And he warns that “residues of vegetable oil factories are thrown into the river, and within these factories there are accompanying factories called (powder factories) that produce a lot of waste such as sulfonics, costic and other materials that can be converted into materials such as pesticides, fertilizers, phosphates, or microelements that enter in the fertilizer process for nurseries.”
"The same is the case with dozens of factories that dump their industrial waste without benefiting from it through recycling," he asserts.
waste investment
Specialists call for the need to invest in waste recycling as it gives economic value, through the establishment of projects that invest waste and industrially recycle it in the production of many products, the most important of which is organic fertilizer for household waste, aluminum and iron sheets, in addition to bags, preservation boxes and rubber materials.
The economic importance of waste recycling, according to the researcher in economic affairs, Ahmed Eid, “lies in providing labor and opening the field of operation, in addition to providing opportunities for self-sufficiency in many materials, and the possibility of exporting them in order to preserve the hard currency that leaves the country towards Iran, Turkey and China to import goods and commodities that can be manufactured.” locally through waste recycling.
Eid explains, "The local production of waste and the recycling process provides alternative opportunities to direct production for export or for the local market, which gives a higher internal financial return rate and is more economically efficient."
Waste recycling project
The Municipality of Baghdad is studying waste management and treatment through effective methods for producing electric energy or methane gas or sorting and selling it for recycling again, according to the Director General of the Department of Relations and Information in the Municipality of Baghdad, Muhammad al-Rubaie.
Al-Rubaie explains, “The waste recycling project is an investment, and a committee was formed by the Prime Minister that includes the Mayor of Baghdad, the Ministries of Environment and Electricity, the National Investment Commission, and the Council of Councilors.”
He added, “This committee included a sub-committee in the Municipality of Baghdad, including the director of the Solid Waste Department, the Planning and Follow-up Directorate, and the Sewage Directorate. This committee held several meetings 6 months ago, and work is underway to study the offers of about 40 companies that applied for the project, most of which are foreign and some of which are partners with Iraqi capitals.
And he shows, “The project, being an investment, saw the Mayor of Baghdad that it be presented to the National Investment Commission and the best offer comes from it to contract with the Municipality of Baghdad,” stressing that “the offers are currently under study and awaiting approval of the best among them to choose,” expressing his hope for the success of the idea to solve the waste management crisis In Baghdad. Waste in Iraq.. Huge neglected wealth waiting to be invested.
