    The Minister of Planning, Muhammad Ali Tamim, confirmed, on Monday, that the ministry is continuing to conduct the general census of population and housing in Iraq, before the end of next year, after the approval of the Council of Ministers on that, and the provision of financial allocations within the budget law.
    During the expanded meeting that the Minister held with a number of ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations working in Iraq, with the aim of discussing international support for the ministry's efforts to conduct the census, Tamim mentioned in a statement received by "Al-Iqtisad News" the role of international partners in supporting the process and the political system after 2003, especially in combating terrorism and supporting and rebuilding Iraq in projects and services. Proceed with the population census project. Which requires the need for international assistance and support and benefit from experiences in coordination with the United Nations Population Program. Being true partners in supporting, directing and advising on this project.
    He pointed out that "the political challenges that were hindering the implementation of the census have been addressed, and therefore the fourth quarter of next year will be suitable for the implementation of this project after completing all the requirements and infrastructure necessary to conduct it."
    For his part, the Director of the Office of the United Nations Population Fund in Iraq, Nestor Omohangi, praised in the same statement the decision of the Iraqi government to proceed with the implementation of the general population census, expressing the Fund's readiness to provide support to the Ministry of Planning and the Central Statistical Organization to accomplish it, as it is a very large project.
    In addition, the head of the census operations room, head of the Central Bureau of Statistics, Diaa Awad Kazem, explained: The agency, in coordination and cooperation with the Kurdistan Region Statistics Authority, and the United Nations Population Fund, is working to complete the previous series of census operations that began in a scientific and systematic manner since 1977 and continued in this way every ten years until its implementation stopped after 1997. Stressing that the general population census is one of the important national projects that the Iraqi government seeks to accomplish in the nearest time. possible time.
    Among the advisor of the United Nations Population Fund, Mahdi Al-Alaq: After a series of deliberations organized by the Fund in the regional office and the Iraq office, he submitted a national code to the Iraqi Council of Ministers, which included twenty articles, which were approved by the Council and issued in 2020, which confirmed that the census should not be involved in dealing with political or administrative problems. To distance the census from political influences, in addition to supporting the directions of the United Nations Population Fund in providing technical assistance, as well as urging other international organizations and donor countries and organizations to provide support to Iraq to ensure the success of the general population census.
    In the same context, the head of statistics in the Kurdistan region, Sirwan Muhammed Mohiuddin, indicated the level of great cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Planning and the Central Statistical Organization in all steps and activities related to conducting the census, and that there is a common understanding of the importance of the census, to ensure fair distribution of wealth among the provinces.
    The meeting was attended by the Administrative Undersecretary of the Ministry, Dr. Azhar Hussein Saleh, the Executive Director General and the heads of the work sectors of the General Population Census.
