Shafaq News/ The head of the Environmental Protection and Improvement Authority in the Kurdistan Region, Abdul Rahman Siddiq, announced on Sunday that he called on the United Nations to help them green three areas in the region that are at risk of desertification.
Siddiq said in a press conference held today in Erbil that there are no specific statistics on the rate of desertification in the Kurdistan Region.
He added that the authority asked the United Nations to help it green the three regions: Garmian, southern Dohuk, and western Erbil, as they are at risk of desertification.

Iraq is considered one of the five countries most affected by climate change, and it constitutes living evidence that global action has not yet crystallized, and that achievement is much more difficult than recommendations and decisions, and that the land, as in Iraq specifically, is thirsty, and it has long been known throughout its civilizations as the land of Mesopotamia, which requires effective solutions based on trees and forests, as humanity's seeming last resort in order to save the Earth.
Official figures in Iraq confirm that desertification has affected 39% of the lands, and the increase in soil salinity threatens the agricultural sector in 54% of the cultivated lands, noting that the rainy season for the year 2020-2021 was the driest in the past 40 years, which led to a shortage Sharp water flows in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, reaching 29% (in the Tigris) and 73% (in the Euphrates).
International and local experts believe that Iraq needs more afforestation that achieves oxygen balance in order to control carbon dioxide levels, contribute to conserving water in the soil and prevent rapid drying of water sources such as rivers.
