    Baghdad today - Sulaymaniyah
The Kurdish academic and political analyst, Behrouz Al-Jaf, considered today, Tuesday (September 12, 2023), that Sulaymaniyah currently has stronger economic cards than Turkey, with the continued Turkish ban on flights to and from Sulaymaniyah Airport.
Al-Jaf said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “Sulaimaniyah’s cards are stronger than Turkey’s, and the city is not affected by the Turkish economic blockade as it depends on Iranian imports and has an excellent relationship with the Iraqi government.”
He added, "Sulaymaniyah has become economically empowered at the present time and is very developed in the agricultural and even industrial aspects. It has factories that it can invest in."
He pointed out that "the decision to prevent the Kurdistan Region from exporting oil to and through Turkey is in the interest of Sulaymaniyah, since oil exports and the 50-year agreement signed by the regional government cause economic disasters for the Kurds."
Last July, Turkey extended the flight ban on Sulaymaniyah Airport for another six months, after it imposed it for the first time last April, after accusing Sulaymaniyah of facilitating the movement of PKK members through its airport.
Officials estimate that flights in Sulaymaniyah decreased by about 40% after the Turkish ban, after the airport was witnessing about 100 flights daily to and from Turkey, while the financial losses resulting from this ban have been estimated so far at about 30 million dollars, according to Kurdish economic analysts.
