Parliament discusses Turkish air embargo on Sulaymaniyah airport

Parliament will discuss in the upcoming sessions the repercussions of the Turkish military invasion of the villages and towns of Dohuk Governorate in the Kurdistan Region, in conjunction with the Turkish air embargo on Sulaymaniyah International Airport, considering them a blatant violation of the country's sovereignty.
Faten Al-Qarghouli, a member of the Transport and Communications Committee, told Al-Sabah: “The committee, based on its oversight and parliamentary role, visited Sulaymaniyah Airport to discuss the Turkish air embargo on Sulaymaniyah Airport and flights heading to it, considering it a violation of sovereignty,” adding that “the committee discussed with the airport director and navigation service owners the positions of the political parties, in addition to presenting the matter to the Prime Minister for diplomatic intervention.”
Al-Qarghouli explained that "a parliamentary committee will be formed from security, defense, and foreign relations, in addition to examining the obstacles to implementing the investment project for Kirkuk Airport."
In turn, member of the Security and Defense Committee, Mohammed Al-Shammari, expressed his rejection of the “Turkish incursion, because it was carried out without the government’s permission or knowledge,” noting that “the incursion has transformed from merely striking targets to an actual occupation, with the Turkish forces stationed and using heavy machinery and concrete blocks, which indicates an intention to remain and expand.”
Al-Shammari added that "this act is rejected and condemned by all international norms and laws," noting that "the House of Representatives will discuss the issue seriously during its upcoming sessions, and that the Security and Defense Committee will take a clear position on this matter with the start of the new legislative session."
For her part, Member of Parliament Faten Al-Qarghouli stressed that “the Turkish presence in northern Iraq is absolutely unacceptable, and that this issue will be discussed within the House of Representatives and its relevant committees, especially the Security and Defense Committee.”
She explained to Al-Sabah that “Turkish forces recently searched homes in Dohuk, in addition to violating Iraq’s sovereignty with regard to Sulaymaniyah Airport, which has been subject to a Turkish ban for more than a year and a half, unlike the rest of the Iraqi airports.”
