A government official revealed, on Saturday, that a decision on a 10,000-acre project in Diyala had been postponed.
The mayor of Baquba District, Abdullah Al-Hayali, said in an interview with Al-Maalouma, “A joint government committee was formed two months ago in order to determine the site for building a new city in Diyala with an area of up to 10 thousand dunams. A site was chosen in the vicinity of Al-Muqdadiya district (40 km northeast of Baqubah).” .
He added, "The site was not supported by the local government of Diyala because of its distance from the center of the governorate, which necessitated postponing the decision on the project until another site is identified that would be close to Baqubah or its surroundings, especially since the greatest momentum of the housing crisis is concentrated directly there, 40%."
He pointed out that "the 10,000 dunum project, if implemented, will be the largest city in Diyala as a whole in 70 years and will address a large proportion of the housing crisis that has reached its peak in the province."
Diyala Governorate has been suffering from a stifling housing crisis in recent years due to the lack of prospects for containing the housing increase and creating new cities. Ended 25 February
