In recent hours, the armed factions calling themselves the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” launched a series of attacks targeting American forces in Iraq and Syria, taking in a number of their attacks the Rabia area northwest of Mosul in Nineveh Governorate as their focal point due to its proximity to the border.
The Iraqi government's efforts did not succeed in containing the escalation between the Iranian-backed armed factions and the American forces, which expanded during the past weeks, after those factions ended the truce following the Israeli aggression on Gaza and American support for the occupation, according to statements issued by those factions.
During the past hours, a missile bombardment targeted the “Harir” base, near Erbil Airport, and another attack targeted the “Ain al-Assad” base, where the American army is stationed in Anbar Governorate, western Iraq, and two American military bases in Syria, the first in (Kharab al-Jir), and the second in The Green Village in the Syrian Hasakah Governorate, while the American forces responded by targeting an armed faction site in the Dibis District, last night, Sunday, in the Kirkuk Governorate, resulting in the killing of 5 militants from the “Harakat al-Nujaba” group.
The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” carried out its attack on the American base in (Kharab al-Jir), eastern Syria, from the Rabia area northwest of Mosul in Nineveh Governorate, while security sources told “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” that the attack was carried out via a water tanker, and was used. It has 6 missiles.
The Rabia region is a safe Iranian corridor.
Nineveh Governorate extends from the western side to the Syrian border. The governorate is linked via a small area to Turkey through the Tal Afar district in the north, and is linked to the Kurdistan region through the governorates of Dohuk and Erbil. It is also linked to the southeast with Kirkuk Governorate and the southwest to Anbar Governorate, while it is linked from The southern side of Saladin Governorate.
As for the Rabia area, it is one of the districts affiliated with the Tal Afar District, which is administratively affiliated with the Nineveh Governorate. It is the link linking Nineveh with the Syrian and Turkish lands. It is also linked to the Kurdistan Region on the opposite side of the city of Zakho in the Dohuk Governorate, while it also extends to the Sinjar District, which is under the control of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
Researcher and strategic expert Firas Elias confirmed that Nineveh Governorate represents one of the important pillars for the armed factions that can use its lands to escalate against the American forces, indicating that one of the reasons for the armed factions’ use of Nineveh to carry out missile attacks is due to the weak American presence in that region and the lack of bases. Military forces of the US Army in Nineveh, despite the governorate’s vast geography and its connection to the Syrian border.
Elias said in a statement to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed: Nineveh Governorate represents a strategic pillar for the factions, due to its proximity to the Syrian border, and it is also witnessing a heavy spread of armed factions, a characteristic through which the factions are trying to exploit to achieve the greatest amount of pressure and attrition of the American forces present in Eastern Syria.
He added that the Rabia region “represents part of the safe Iranian corridor in northern Iraq, which connects it to the Mediterranean Sea through Syrian territory, and the complex geographical nature and the factions’ control over the entire geographical strip extending from Sinjar, the Rabia region and the Syrian border, and the weakness of the American presence in this region, are Strategic incentives that the factions exploit to launch attacks on American bases in eastern Syria.”
The strategic expert pointed out that the bombing operations carried out by the factions come within an internal and external context through which the factions are trying to market themselves, as they carry internal messages to confirm the sincerity of their slogans of confrontation with the United States, and externally to confirm their indirect involvement in the ongoing war in Gaza.
The Iraqi military expert and researcher at the “Rasam” Center for Studies, Hatem Al-Falahi, pointed out that Nineveh’s status and importance led to strengthening the control of armed factions close to Tehran over it, which explains the spread of the Popular Mobilization Forces units on the western side of Mosul because Nineveh is located within a road extending towards The Mediterranean Sea.
Al-Falahi said in an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed: “Nineveh is a very important strategic region for Iran and its factions. It is the key to entering the Kurdistan region because of the common border between Nineveh and the provinces of Dohuk and Erbil, as well as Nineveh’s connection to Kirkuk Governorate, in addition to its connection to the Syrian border.” .
Al-Falahi pointed out that the Iraqi arena cannot be separated from other arenas such as Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, which are part of what is called the “axis of resistance,” noting that “mutual bombing between the factions and American forces comes within the policy of action and reaction, and will continue in this manner in the next phase as long as As long as the strikes do not cross the red lines drawn by Washington, and as long as the American side does not want to enter into a direct and open confrontation in the region at the present time.”
He considered that “the missile bombardment targeting American bases in Iraq or Syria has no strategic value at the operational level with regard to the Gaza battle, but it comes within the tactical and tactical level only.”
On the ninth of last November, a joint patrol of American forces and Iraqi counter-terrorism forces was bombed by an explosive device near the Mosul Dam area, and the armed factions later claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Mosul activist Saif Al-Hamdan confirmed that using the lands of Nineveh as a starting point for carrying out attacks against American headquarters in the region would drag the province afflicted by the recent war against ISIS into the cycle of conflict and war again.
Al-Hamdan said in an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, “The general atmosphere in Nineveh Governorate refuses to involve Mosul and the entire Nineveh region in a new military conflict,” stressing that the prevailing opinion in Nineveh calls for the necessity of adhering to the authority of the state and the law and not dragging the province into external and international conflicts.
He also emphasized that the majority in Nineveh leans toward state authority and confining weapons to its hands and not allowing the current manifestations that would expose Iraq and Nineveh to American military strikes and severe economic sanctions, the price of which will be paid by the general public of the Iraqi people.
Since the outbreak of the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip, Iraqi armed factions close to Iran have launched a series of attacks on military bases where American forces are present in Syria and Iraq. According to the factions, these attacks come in response to the ongoing Israeli bombing and aggression on the Gaza Strip.
