    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (January 5, 2024), Member of the House of Representatives, Thaer Al-Jubouri, revealed Turkish requests regarding the Iraqi development road, while noting that the project will create a qualitative shift in international transport paths.
Al-Jubouri told "Baghdad Today", "The countries of the world, including Turkey, realize the strategic importance of the development road that Sudanese announced months ago, as it can attract 10-15% of international transport traffic towards Iraqi territory through the ports of Basra and from there to Europe."
He added, "Turkey has actually knocked on the doors of the Sudanese government in order for its companies to have an important role in implementing the project's paragraphs and axes, as it constitutes a vital part of the mechanisms for its practical implementation, as it is the one linking Baghdad to Europe via its roads and associated railways."
Al-Jubouri pointed out, “The development road will be linked to the water security file for Baghdad,” noting that “Ankara is open to this aspect, especially since it is aware of the great economic returns that it will generate through this project, which will create a qualitative shift in international transport routes, especially from Southeast Asia and India.” “Towards Europe, which is the least expensive compared to other projects currently proposed in the region.”
Last December, two delegations from Turkey and Iraq discussed the steps that must be taken in order to implement the “Development Road” project as soon as possible, as it is expected to contribute to the development of Iraq and the region .
This came in the joint final statement of the consultations that took place between the delegations of the two countries, which included Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein, and senior military and security officials from the two countries in the capital, Ankara .
The statement stated that the delegations of the two countries held comprehensive consultations on bilateral and regional issues, especially the areas of combating terrorism, security and water, and added: As a result of these meetings, the two parties agreed to continue developing relations between the two countries and manage them in a comprehensive and institutional manner, and affirmed their strong common political will in this direction .
In the statement, the two parties stressed that regional security, stability and prosperity will be possible through making progress in areas of cooperation such as trade, investment, transportation and infrastructure, within the framework of a joint strategic vision .
The statement added: “In this context, the steps that must be taken to implement the development road project were discussed, which would contribute to the development of Iraq and the region as quickly as possible .”
He pointed out that the two sides discussed the common challenges related to climate change and water issues and decided to continue the work of the joint permanent committee formed to deal with these challenges .
The statement confirmed that Turkey and Iraq agreed to continue meetings and communications on these issues on a regular and uninterrupted basis .
The "Development Road" project, which was announced by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani late last May, includes the land and railway road extending from Iraq to Turkey and its ports .
The road begins from the port of Al-Faw in the Gulf of Basra, and is planned to consist of a land and railway road with a length of 1,200 kilometers within Iraqi territory, and to link it to the Turkish railway network .
The project's investment budget is about $17 billion, and it will be completed in three phases, the first ending in 2028, the second in 2033, and the third in 2050.
