Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The English Gallup News Foundation said that Iraqis’ confidence in their political and national institutions has increased, indicating that Iraqis believe that their country stands on more solid ground.
The Foundation stated in a report translated by Al-Masala, that Iraqis’ confidence in their political and national institutions rose last year, including a record percentage of 56% who expressed their confidence in the national government, which was formed in late 2022.
This number easily exceeds any previous measure since 2008, but it also stands out in the Middle East and North Africa region, where trust in the national government is rare. Only Iranians (60%) and Jordanians (77%) are more confident than Iraqis in their national government.
The report added that the recent regional repercussions resulting from the war between Hamas and Israel may constitute a test of the Iraqis’ new confidence. The head of the United Nations political mission in Iraq said that the escalation of regional violence threatens to undermine Iraq’s progress towards stability, leaving the country on a knife’s edge.
Iraqis now view their leadership more positively than in many other neighboring countries in the Middle East. In 2019, with the beginning of the October protests, the opposite was true: only 13% of Iraqis approved of leading their country, an easily lower percentage than Many neighboring countries in the region.
These positive views are not shared across Iraq. Most of the improvement in Iraqis' evaluations of their leadership has come not from Iraqi Kurdistan, where 29% approve of the country's leadership, but from elsewhere in Iraq, where 55% approve.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani received a strong approval rating (69%) among Iraqis in 2023, the highest of any Iraqi leader since it began tracking the measure in 2012.
Despite signs of political stability, long-term challenges remain in the fabric of the Iraqi state. Eighty-six percent of Iraqis believe that corruption is widespread in government, one of the highest rates in the world.
Iraqis' confidence in key state institutions continued to rise in 2023, reaching new highs or matching previous levels. Iraqis' confidence in the local police rose to 82% last year, the highest total ever recorded. Support for the army also reached 82%. %, which equals the previous record high since 2009.
In 2023, half of Iraqis felt their domestic economy was improving, compared to 32% who felt the situation was getting worse (net optimism 18 points). Overall, this is about as optimistic Iraqis have been about the path of their domestic economy since Gallup began tracking it. Action in 2013.
