    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (June 20, 2024), member of the Kurdistan Justice Party, Rebwar Muhammad Amin, commented on the drowning of dozens of Kurdish migrants on the Italian border, considering that illegal immigration is active during the summer.
Muhammad Amin said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “dozens of Kurdish youth drowned on the European borders because of the lack of suitable conditions and a decent life for them within the region.”
He added, "During the summer, illegal immigration is active, and the regional government must bear its responsibility, and also the Iraqi government, considering that those who die are Iraqis and young people who did not get a decent life in their country."
He pointed out that "the lack of job opportunities and the economic situation within the region is the main reason behind the increasing migration of Kurdish youth."
A few days ago, a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank on the Italian coast, leading to the death of more than 70 people, including large numbers of Iraqi Kurds.
The number of Kurdish immigrants to Europe in 2021 reached more than 28 thousand immigrants, and the number decreased in 2023 to less than 20 thousand immigrants, according to specialized organizations.
Attempts to immigrate after 2015 from the Kurdistan region due to security events, then the recurring economic crises in Kurdistan, and the suppression of freedoms, especially those affecting journalists, caused the death of dozens of people as a result of drowning or difficult and bad conditions during illegal immigration attempts.
Attempts at illegal immigration and the great demand for it have led to the emergence of professional human smugglers and dangerous and wanted figures in Europe on charges of smuggling people and causing their deaths.
