A move to build hospitals to treat mental disorders

The Ministry of Health intends to establish a number of hospitals to treat psychological disorders, while revealing that there is a shortage of psychiatrists throughout the country, whose number does not exceed 150 doctors.
The National Advisor for Mental Health in the Ministry, Dr. Adnan Yassin Muhammad, told Al-Sabah: “The hospitals will be distributed as follows: two in Basra Governorate in the Al-Qibla and Medical City areas, one in the Al-Khairat area in Karbala Governorate, one in each of Nineveh on an area of 16 dunums, and the capital Baghdad in the Al-Ghazaliya area, which will witness the construction of an integrated medical complex for mental disorders and drugs, in addition to a request submitted by a member of the House of Representatives to build 4 hospitals with a capacity of 200 beds in each of Kirkuk, Samawah, Wasit, and Maysan, and planning approval was obtained for that.
He pointed to the readiness of one of the centers affiliated with the Holy Shrine of Ali to open in Najaf Governorate, indicating that there is a shortage of psychiatrists throughout the country, as their number does not exceed 150 doctors only, due to the reluctance to join this important branch of medicine.
Muhammad explained that the recent period witnessed the opening of postgraduate studies in the Iraqi and Arab boards, and the expansion of admission seats to range between 40-50 students in postgraduate studies, in addition to the presence of 170 Students, distributed over four stages, to solve the problem of the shortage of psychiatrists during the next stage. He added that an average of 3,000-3,500 patients per month visit Ibn Rushd Hospital in Baghdad suffering from psychological disorders, which indicates that the culture of visiting psychiatrists exists, but it needs more awareness through the media, noting that the process of opening specialized institutions for psychological disorders and awareness has increased the number of patients.
He pointed out that the ministry held a celebration last week on World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10, to introduce it, as it does not mean that a person is free of disease, but rather it is the way he deals flexibly with crises, and the state of psychological and social integration that enables him to interact with the environment in a positive and smooth way.
