The Ministry of Health revealed the existence of a plan to build 15 hospitals with a capacity of 100 beds to treat drug addicts.
The Rapporteur of the Supreme National Commission for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs in the Ministry, Dr. Ahmed Ebadi Abdel Hassan, told Al-Sabah: The spread of drugs represents one of the pages of targeting people, if not the most dangerous, because they mainly target the youth group, which represents the active working group in society.
He added that the statistics show that the highest group registered among users is between 18-30 years of age, and therefore the battle with drugs is long and fierce, requiring the unification and intensification of security, health, and media awareness efforts.
He stated that what we see of the increase in seizures of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances is in fact a clear positive indicator of the increase in security and intelligence efforts from all our security agencies in reducing this dangerous scourge, in addition to the fact that the Ministry and the Minister of Health, Dr. Saleh Al-Hasnawi, Head of the Supreme National Authority for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Affairs It is making great efforts in treating drug abusers and addicts, by opening centers for treating addicts and reintegrating them, and providing the necessary staff for this through training courses and exchanging experiences, while developing methods of detection and examination through the efforts of the Forensic Medicine Department in Baghdad and its departments in the governorates, in addition to implementing plans in prevention. Raising awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and its devastating effects on the family and society.
Abdul Hassan praised the efforts made by the media and journalists for the important roles they play in providing insight and highlighting the enemies’ plans to disrupt the system of values and morals by promoting this hateful scourge.
He confirmed that there is an increase in the number of addiction treatment centers, as the Prime Minister opened two months ago the Canal Center for Psychological and Social Rehabilitation with a capacity of 150 beds, and five addiction treatment centers were opened in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior in the governorates of Najaf, Karbala, Salah al-Din, Anbar, and Kirkuk, with a capacity of 100 beds, pointing out that Within the plans, five new advanced centers were opened, for which a special budget was allocated, in five major governorates, with a capacity of 100 beds.
He explained that the plan drawn up by the Minister of Health is to open a hospital for treating addicts with a capacity of 100 beds in each governorate. We have prepared the engineering planning for it and are cooperating with governors and officials to allocate the necessary lands for this. Some governorates responded immediately by allocating the required lands. Regarding the medications needed to treat addicts, the commission’s rapporteur stated their availability in addiction treatment centers and psychiatric wards in all hospitals, and the Technical Affairs Department in the Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Pharmacists Syndicate and the head of the Iraqi and Arab Scientific Council for Psychiatry, established the regulations for granting a license to dispense the necessary medications for a specific category of patients. Doctors who specialize in treating addiction and develop instructions for dispensing these medications from a scientific and medical perspective to ensure prevention of their diversion and misuse.
