The engineering and technical staff in the Kurdistan Region completed the Bastura Dam in Erbil Governorate as part of plans to focus on dam and reservoir projects to enhance water security and achieve sustainable development. The project supervisor, Sherko Mohammed, told Al-Sabah: The Bastura Dam project is one of the important projects completed by local engineering and technical staff with the support of the regional government, which has paid great attention to water resources, as it is aware of the future effects and risks of climate change and the risk of drought, in addition to other important advantages, including that the project contributes to increasing groundwater and irrigation for agricultural areas, as well as being a tourist attraction and a source of fish wealth and reducing the risk of floods.
He added that the dam located north of Erbil city is (560) meters long and (20) meters high, while its storage capacity reaches (20) million cubic meters, and it also benefits from collecting rainwater.
