Looking to get back on the winning track after their three-game winning streak and five-game point streak was snapped, Lindy Ruff's Dallas Stars (16-15-7) will play their first game of the 2017 calendar year when they host Michel Therrien's Montreal Canadiens (23-9-6) on Wednesday night. Game time at the American Airlines Center is 7 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.

This is the first of two meetings this season between the inter-conference teams. Last year, Dallas took three of four possible points (1-0-1) from the 2015-16 season series.

Dallas is coming off a 3-1 home loss to the Florida Panthers on New Years Eve. The Stars dug a cavernous early hole for themselves, falling behind 3-0 in the first period, and were unable to recover. Overall, Ruff's team is 3-1-2 over its last six games. Wednesday's match is the final game of a three-game homestand for the Stars, who will have played eight of their last nine games at home at the current homestand's conclusion.

Thereafter, Dallas will embark upon a busy stretch of eight games -- six road, two home -- over 12 nights, taking the team across the Pacific, Central and Eastern time zones.

The Stars will be without team captain Jamie Benn for at least Wednesday's game. He is day-to-day with a foot injury sustained in the Florida game. The team appears likely to get agitating winger Antoine Roussel (upper-body injury) back in the lineup after a four-game absence.

On paper at least, the rested Stars should have the fresher legs for Wedneday's game.

The Canadiens are playing the sixth match of a seven-game road trip and the second half of back-to-back games. On Tuesday, the Habs claimed a 2-1 overtime road victory against the Nashville Predators on Max Pacioretty's game-winning score in the final half-minute of overtime. Longtime Preds defenseman Shea Weber scored in regulation in his first game in Nashville after the blockbuster offseason trade that sent PK Subban to the Predators. Another ex-Pred, forward Alexander Radulov notched primary assists on both Montreal's regulation and OT goals.

With the win, the Habs improved to 2-1-2 on the current road trip. Each of the team's last four games on the trip have gone past regulation, with the Canadiens prevailing twice and losing twice.

The Montreal injury list is significant: Alex Galchenyuk (knee) remains sidilines as do forwards Andrew Shaw (suspected concussion) and David Deharnais (knee) and defensemen Andrei Markov (lower-body injury) and Greg Pateryn (ankle).
