    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani announced today, Sunday, November 24, 2024, the parliament’s support for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in confronting any foreign interference that affects its sovereign decisions.
Al-Mashhadani said in his speech during a ceremony marking the centenary of the founding of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not just an administrative institution, but rather the political mind that manages Iraq’s relations with the outside world. This ministry has witnessed the major transformations that our country has gone through, and has defended Iraq’s rights and interests in the most difficult stages, with a foreign policy approach based on foreign policy strategies, and consistent with the system of international relations.”
"She has managed thorny and complex files, from border disputes to water and energy issues, and from combating terrorism to building international alliances, relying on a long legacy of wisdom and diplomatic experience, as we have seen in her tireless work," he added.
He explained that "Iraqi diplomacy is not only a reflection of positions, but it is a tool for influence and international decision-making. From this standpoint, the role of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after a century of its existence, is growing with the current challenges facing Iraq in light of regional and international transformations, especially in the post-October 7, 2023 period and the subsequent security and political escalation in the region."
Al-Mashhadani stressed that, "The House of Representatives, which I am honored to chair today, as a supervisory and legislative body, is a fundamental partner in determining the features of the country's foreign policy, and we in it are keen to ensure that the relationship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is complementary, so as to ensure more effective performance of our diplomacy in serving the national interest, especially the Foreign Relations Committee with its tireless work."
He continued, "Just as the Council of Representatives seeks to ensure that Iraqi foreign policy is consistent with Iraq's internal orientations, and that it is managed with the logic of independence and positive neutrality, far from alignments that may harm Iraq's unity and sovereignty, we support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in confronting any external interference that affects its sovereign decisions, and we always urge it to adopt a balanced policy that reflects the popular will, represented by the Council of Representatives, and serves Iraq's strategic goals."
Al-Mashhadani noted that, “Iraqi diplomacy must be based on a clear strategic vision that takes into account our national interests and is consistent with regional and international transformations, with the following pillars:
    1. National sovereignty:
    2. Political action that enhances sovereignty externally:
    3. Promoting the political, economic and social interests of Iraqis abroad and cultural activity that promotes Iraq abroad.
The Speaker of the Council of Representatives explained, "This celebration and the Eighth Ambassadors Conference represent an opportunity to renew our joint commitment to strengthening Iraqi-Arab, regional and international cooperation. It is also an occasion to emphasize the importance of Iraqi diplomatic work to confront the challenges facing our Iraq and the nation, from military escalation in Gaza and Lebanon to economic, societal and climate crises."
At the end of his speech, Al-Mashhadani praised: “I appreciate all the efforts made by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the course of a hundred years, and I testify that its path is an integral part of Iraq’s path, and its policy that achieves its will in the diplomatic approach according to the rules of work of this ministry, and that the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the next stage will be decisive in protecting our political interests and strengthening our Arab, regional and international position.”
