    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Ministry of Transport announced, today, Sunday, November 24, 2024, the completion of excavation work and linking the immersed tunnel manufacturing basin with the Khor Al-Zubair Canal in Basra Governorate, in preparation for floating the ten concrete pieces that make up the tunnel in the navigational canal.
The media office of the ministry said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today" that "the concrete pieces of the submerged tunnel, one of the projects of the Grand Faw Port, will be floated one by one, to be transferred to the designated place, after the completion of digging the trench, in conjunction with the readiness of these pieces for the floating process, as work will be carried out to form the submerged part, to connect the two banks of the Khor Al-Zubair Canal from the Umm Qasr side to the Faw side."
He pointed out that "on October 16, the water was opened to submerge the ten concrete blocks in the submerged tunnel basin, which had been completed and prepared for submersion inside the Zubair Navigation Channel," indicating that "these blocks were subjected to inspection and testing."
He explained that "work will begin on completing the road linking the port of Faw towards the city of Safwan via the submerged tunnel, then it will enter via two bridges, as the completion rate of the first bridge has reached 98%, and the other 96%."
The statement pointed out that "the completion rate of the quay structures for the container terminal reached 100%, and the road linking the ports of Al-Faw and Umm Qasr reached 92.43%, and the submerged tunnel crossing Khor Abdullah reached 58.47%, while the completion rate in the first phase of marine excavation and backfilling works reached 79.33%."
He added, "The work on the navigation channel of the Grand Faw Port has reached a completion rate of 77.41%, the completion rate in the port components is 81%, and in the container yard is 88%."
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani had previously sponsored the ceremony of receiving the five berths of the Grand Faw Port in Basra Governorate, and their actual entry into operation, after they were completed by the Korean implementing company; where he stressed in his speech during the handover ceremony, the importance of the five berths in the Grand Faw Port, as they represent the backbone of the port project in its first phase, which will be completed next year according to the previous timetables. Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport, Professor Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, considered the Grand Faw Port and Development Road projects to be the gateway to economic growth in Iraq and the region.
The Ministry of Transport says that "the year 2025 will witness the completion of the detailed design phase of the development road project, then the transition to presenting the project to major international companies, to compete for promising investment opportunities in this project, coinciding with the opening of the first phase of the Grand Faw Port in the middle of next year."
