The Leafs thumped New Jersey on Friday, chasing Schneider from the net before the end of the first period. Toronto had a 4-0 lead and ended up closing out the game 4-2 and took an easy two points against a Devils team that really does seem to be in no man’s land in terms of what they are doing going forward.

Unfortunately on Saturday night when Toronto hosted the Montreal Canadiens they didn’t have as much gas left in the tank as us fans were hoping.

It was just 20 seconds into the game when Captain Max Pacioretty scored the first goal for Montreal giving them an early lead and really setting the tone for the night. Of all people, Pacioretty scores; he’s softer than butter yet seems to find the back of the net more often than not versus the Maple Leafs. Can’t Kadri give him the McDavid treatment? Or maybe we need to bring back Grabovski to bite him again, something’s got to give. Maybe a little tap on Martin’s shoulder for a couple shifts to get the ball rolling is something Bab’s needs to think about next time we face the Habs.

It seems as if the JVR-Kadri-Marner line was on fire but unfortunately the other lines were not nearly as strong on the puck. Markham magician Mitch Marner was electric on Saturday, getting a primary assist on all three Maple Leafs goals. James van Riemsdyk also chipped in handsomely with a goal and two assists. Unfortunately the rest of the team seemed to be pretty gassed including Leafs go-to net minder Frederik Andersen. I still think it was the right call playing Andersen on a back to back game since he gives the Maple Leafs the best chance to win a game versus a powerhouse like Montreal. With that being said, if Toronto had a capable backup that they feel comfortable with and confident he can help them win; then by all means they should have played their backup goalie.

Everything in life is easier to look back and say “oh id have drafted this person or started this goalie, etc.” That’s not how real life works so we just have to move on and continue the playoff push going forward. Toronto doesn’t play until Friday night when they venture to New York to take on the Rangers. Both teams will be well rested, having a number of days off in between games and should be hungry for a win.

The Leafs will of course have another back to back game versus a rival team in their division. Bettman, you weasel you.

Toronto has the Senators lined up for Saturday which could be a big game if both teams are neck and neck in a playoff race. As it stands now the Leafs and Senators are just two points back of eachother with the same number of games played. It could be quite the battle of Ontario!

That game on Saturday marks the middle of the season milestone for the Maple Leafs as it will be game number 41. Right now Toronto has 44 points, so if they can squeak out a few more points in these next two games they will be on pace for 90+ points which is extremely good considering where they ended up last season.

Just imagine if the Leafs had won a couple more shootouts and or held one or two of those third period leads they blew. They could be on pace for close to 100 points, and that’s being realistic!

It seems the tide is about to turn in Leafs Nation.

Things could either drift off to the sea and the Leafs fail to make the playoffs but add another solid player through the draft in the top 10. Or do they continue to flourish under Babcock and settle with a first pick in the middle, but gain a playoff berth and some much needed experience?

As the mid-season approaches the games get tougher to win and most teams have figured out their system and will also have the oppositions system figured out to a certain extent.

It’s time for Babcock to put the pedal to the metal and see if the boys in blue can handle the heat.

So will any Maple Leafs players make the all-star game?

Will the Leafs make the playoffs?

Who if anyone will be traded before deadline?

A few quality questions ahead as the Leafs continue their back-to-back brigade.

Hopefully everyone had a great weekend.
