In this edition of the hotstove we share our picks for the most underutilized forward in the NHL>

    Todd Cordell

My pick is Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou and I'm not sure it's close.

Over the last two seasons, the following players have logged at least 600 minutes at 5v5 and averaged more points per 60 than Athanasiou: Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid.

Obviously, the sample size isn't large but, given Athanasiou's speed and skill level, it's not hard to see why he has been so productive when given the opportunity.

Despite what he has accomplished in such a short period of time, Athanasiou ranks 10th among Red Wings forwards in time on ice per game this season. He has played a little more of late but that's pretty inexcusable given Detroit's current state. It's not as if all the guys playing in front of him are lighting it up. Riley Sheahan (zero goals in 45 games) and Luke Glendening (one goal in 47 games) are perfect examples of that.

Give Athanasiou the minutes he deserves and reap the rewards.

    Peter Tessier

This is a hard one to answer because you have to have seen a lot of hockey by all teams to really appreciate where or who this kind of forward is. I'm being a homer and going with Nic Petan.

Petan is a natural centre but has played the left side at times and so far this season mainly on the 4th line with Chris Thorburn and/or Branden Tanev or Andrew Copp. He's better than that and his numbers suggest a bigger upside. It might only be to a second line level but he's not getting the minutes and role to capitalize on his skill. The Jets are fairly deep in the C position with Little and Scheifele at 1-2 and Lowry anchoring Armia and Matthias.

With Stafford out though Paul Maurice has said that Petan will move up for time on the second line with Ehlers and Schiefele- this will be as a winger but should be another look at what could be coming for the young forward.
