Toronto and the Detroit Red Wings meet for the first time since the Centennial Classic at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday, as the two Atlantic Division squads fight for position in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race.

Detroit earned points in six straight and are one of six teams tied with 49 points at the bottom of the conference standings, while Toronto has a tenuous hold on the final wild card spot, just one point ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers, but are 8-0-1 in their last nine road games.

The Leafs will once again be without defenseman Morgan Rielly. Rielly skated on Tuesday prior to the club departing for the Motor City, but being scratched for the third straight game is an indicator that the club is being cautious with the injured blueliner and will give him another four days of healing time with the NHL All-Star break this weekend.

Frederik Andersen gets his fifth start in a row after going 2-1-1 on the club’s four-game home stand. Backup Curtis McElhinney, who has not played since January 14, is expected to go against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.

Lou Lamoriello will be busy in the weeks leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline, as the Leafs GM will be working the phones to see if he can take advantage of Toronto’s organizational depth up front to acquire defensive help.

"Let's put it this way: every team has assets and every team has liabilities," Lamoriello said to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun. "And (the Leafs), every day, no different than any other team, do everything you can do get better.

If you have an opportunity to get better, you do. You weigh the pros and cons. If it's not going to make you any better, then you don't do it. You don't do something just for the sake of doing it. That's the only way I can answer a question like that. If there's a way of getting better, we'll get better."

Deals may be easier to complete in the off-season, but contending teams may be desperate enough for a scoring winger to move a promising blueline prospect in a deal for James van Riemsdyk.

A Western Conference team executive told LeBrun that the Leafs would have to consider moving rookie William Nylander in a deal for a top end defenseman.

That prospect is horrifying for some Toronto fans, but the absence of Morgan Rielly has illustrated that the club is at least two quality defensemen away from being able to make the playoffs consistently and having a chance at competing for a Stanley Cup.

Injuries to forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Brendan Leipsic will prevent them from participating in the AHL All-Star Game this weekend in Allentown, PA this weekend.

Winger Kerby Rychel has been selected to represent the Marlies as part of the AHL’s North Division contingent.

The 22-year-old winger was acquired after the NHL Draft last June from the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenseman Scott Harrington and a conditional draft pick and begun scoring regularly after a slow start.

Rychel has eight goals and 18 assists in 38 games for the Leafs AHL affiliate and registered four assists in a 7-4 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack last Friday.
