The Rangers started the game strong but were outplayed, outhustled and outworked in their 6-4 loss to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Granted, New York had little puck luck. But as you know, I am a firm believer in the fact that you make your own luck, and in the second when the Rangers fell apart, they didn't deserve any breaks.

The Rangers earned a power play 11 seconds into the game and put substantial pressure on Jonas Korpisalo, who was starting for Sergei Bobrovsky. Right after it looked New York had scored, Seth Jones beat Henrik Lundqvist in the first shot Columbus posted in the game. Josh Anderson and Nick Holden partially screened Lundqvist, but it's likely a shot he should have saved, and just like that, the Rangers faced another early deficit just 3:53 into the first. It was the eighth time the Rangers have given up a goal on an opponent’s opening shot — the sixth for Lundqvist; staggering numbers.

New York controlled play nearly the last 10 minutes of the first but were unable to capitalize. The Garden crowd may have also been shaking off their All-Star break malaise, because there was no energy in the building. The Rangers used to feed off that energy at home, but far too often it's been lacking, which could be a small contributing factor to their struggles on home ice.

The 6-4 defeat was the Rangers' (31-18-1) fifth loss in their last six home games. At 14-11-1, New York has lost more games in regulation at home this season than they did last season, when they were 27-10-4 at the Garden. I am unsure the cause and how you go from dominant at home a year ago to a paper tiger there this year. Maybe AV and team management has to change the routine at home to get the team to come out with about more fire, as they appear to do on the road.

In the second, it all fell apart. Playing 4-on-4, New York played hot potato with the puck. A lousy clear and poor neutral zone coverage resulted in a 2-on-1 and Brandon Saad beat Lundqvist from the wing inside the faceoff circle over his locker. The third goal was even worse. A quick shot by Jack Johnson somehow was fumbled by Lundqvist, who couldn't hold it in his glove. Kevin Klein failed to clear Alexander Wennberg from crease and he banged in the rebound to make it 3-0. At that point, it was basically turn out the lights.

Lundqvist had seemingly righted the ship before the All-Star break but surrendered three goals on 16 shots Tuesday, two goals on four shots in the first 3:42 of the second before being yanked for the fourth time this season, all occasions at home. He was not good, no question, but didn't get a lot of help from his team. If you want to think Antti Raanta was any better; he allowed three goals in 10 shots after replacing Lundqvist and was also subject to defensive breakdowns. It was mistake after mistake after mistake. Outplayed, outhustled and outworked.

New York scored four goals in the third, the last coming with 1:07 left, after trailing 6-0. Those goals proved to be pure window dressing to make the final result look better. The Rangers did have chances when it was 6-3 but Korpisalo made a pair of excellent saves to thwart the momentum. Why it took New York 40 minutes to really show is beyond me. Don't use the All-Star break as an excuse as both teams dealt with it. Also, to solely blame Lundqvist is to miss the full picture. Plus, I am sure others will use this as a referendum to why AV shouldn't have gotten the extension. Whatever is the cause for the struggles on home ice, New York better figure it out quickly. If you read the post-game quotes, you get a sense the players are also trying to figure out why this is happening.

"I liked our first period," said Derek Stepan. "They get a goal, kind of a seeing-eye goal. Hank made some saves for us in the first. We had plenty of looks. We go into the second period - I liked the way we played in the first period."

On the reason for the poor second period:
“It’s a good question,” Rick Nash said. “I think when you struggle the way we did, I think you look at the small things. You look at individual battles; you look at guys coming back to our net and stopping; you look at guys missing the net on opportunities when you’ve got to hit the net. I think it’s little things like that, and it all leads to the way we played in the first two periods.”

    On Lundqvist's struggles:
“We came off a sequence where he played three really strong games and then we’re off four or five days,” coach Alain Vigneault said. “The only thing he can do — and the only thing we can do as a team — is get back to work.”

If Klein's lousy game isn't enough to get Adam Clendening back in, nothing will. I know he is not the end all and be all, but lord knows, he is better than Klein, though that isn't saying much. Klein was horrific last night, as was the entire D. Play Clendening again with Brady Skjei and for now, leaves the other two parings the same. Pirri and Puempel showed me nothing at all and boy did the Rangers miss Kevin Hayes last night. Get Jesper Fast off the third line, put Oscar Lindberg back in, move J.T. Miller to wing and go with Michael Grabner-Lindberg-Miller. Sit Pirri or Puempel, play one with Fast and Jimmy Vesey on the fourth line. In addition, maybe New York really does need someone who can change the tone of the game with a hit. Get someone who is willing to get his nose dirty, going into the corners to stir something up. I won't say they are soft but having a disturber, for lack of a better word, would be beneficial, especially on nights like yesterday.[/size]
