Senators goalie Craig Anderson readying for return amid wife's cancer battle

Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson has returned to his team after being away for nearly two months while his wife Nicholle continues her cancer treatment.
Anderson, the team’s usual starter, joined his team for practice in Florida on Monday as the Senators returned from the all-star break and prepared to face the Panthers on Tuesday.
While the 35-year-old isn’t set to make a full return yet, the hope is that he’ll be game-ready in two weeks. Meanwhile, the Senators continue to roll with Mike Condon, who has been a solid stand-in during his absence.

“It’s one of those things where if you go in, you’ve got to make sure you’re ready,” Anderson told reporters in the Senators’ dressing room on Monday.
Nicholle Anderson was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a rare throat cancer, in October and has been receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment in New York.
“We’re in recovery right now, and hopefully things continue to go in the right direction,” he said. “The radiation treatment’s over, we’re recovering from that … We knew it was going to be a tough battle … and we’re in that fight right now.”

Up until his leave of absence, Anderson had tallied a 12-6-1 record with the Senators, recording three shutouts — including a 37-save effort in an emotional 2-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 30, days after Nicholle’s diagnosis — and registering a .924 save percentage. He was also twice named one of the NHL’s three stars of the week.
Anderson told reporters that his wife’s battle with cancer has given him new perspective.
“It makes you realize how lucky and fortunate we are to play the game we love. It just shows that win or lose a hockey game, there’s more to life.”

The Senators are currently sitting in second place in the Atlantic Division.
