It was a disappointing weekend for the Montreal Canadiens as they lost 3-2 to the Washington Capitals on Saturday and followed it up with a 1-0 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Super Bowl Sunday. The Canadiens have now lost three games in a row as their offense has dried up, despite being near full health. For some fans it appears as though the sky is following as the team is in a rut. However, the Canadiens remain in a good position as they continue to lead the Atlantic division with 68 points although the Ottawa Senators are eight points behind and hold four games in hand.

    Weekend puck props and flops:

    Props:

    Al Montoya
     - In just his second start this season at the Bell Centre, Montoya did everything but score to give the Canadiens a chance to win the game. It is unfortunate that he recorded a 32 save shutout but will have that shootout loss under his record. To say that he was deserving of a win and two points would be an understatement. Montoya has performed perhaps even above and beyond expectations since he joined the Canadiens. In nearly every game he starts he gives his team an opportunity to win. He stopped Connor McDavid on numerous occasions, the highlight though being his save on the breakaway in overtime.

Max Pacioretty/Phillip Danault/Alexander Radulov on Saturday - The Canadiens first line was absolutely dynamite against the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon. Danault used his speed and forechecking abilities to help create Radulov’s goal whose snipe was simply a thing of beauty. We are saw in awe of Radulov’s passing skills that it is easy to forget what a terrific shot he has. The line dominated nearly every time they were on the ice and they carried the offense for the Canadiens. Radulov had another goal that was called back as Pacioretty unfortunately interfered with Braden Holtby. That goal would have tied the game at two apiece. Instead the Capitals promptly went up 3-1 and Pacioretty’s 25th goal of the season was not enough to spark a real comeback.

Jacob De La Rose - He is with the Canadiens for one reason and one reason only, to help with the penalty kill. Perhaps the crazy thing is that that strategy is actually working. De La Rose has helped stabilize the penalty kill units as his youthfulness is bringing some much needed energy and aggressiveness to the Canadiens PK. He still needs to work on his faceoffs as he won only 40% of his draws on Saturday and just 25% on Sunday. However, his play has made it nearly impossible for head coach Michel Therrien to take him out of the lineup as over the weekend veterans David Desharnais and Brian Flynn each took a turn sitting out.

    Tomas Plekanec
     - Tasked with defending against two of the top players in the NHL, Plekanec did a phenomenal job as he made life as difficult as he possibly could for Alex Ovechkin and Connor McDavid. Without the pressure to contribute offensively, Plekanec was able to focus and shutdown two of the league’s most skilled players. Fans are eager to get rid of Plekanec due to his declining numbers and contract, however he can still defend against the best of them.

    Flops:

    Alex Galchenyuk
    - While he had a few good shifts between Pacioretty and Radulov when Danault missed time with an apparent injury in the third period against the Capitals, Galchenyuk was largely invisible over the weekend. He is simply not playing at the same elite level of play as he was pre his knee injury. Whether it is a lack of confidence, not having his timing back or not yet being in game shape, the matter of the fact remains is that Galchenyuk is not playing up to his abilities. He has not demonstrated enough to warrant additional playing time. Danault played over 19 minutes against the Oilers. There is no way that Galchenyuk is ready for that amount of ice time based on his play thus far. However, he has too much skill to be sitting on the bench for the shootout…

Andrew Shaw - After being benched for much of the game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night due to his indiscipline, Shaw did little to stand out in a positive light over the weekend. He was brought in to be in an energy player but on how many nights has he inspired his teammates? It does not have to be through fighting. A big clean hit would do the job. Shaw continued to take a penalty in each game as he pads on the minutes. At some point the light has to go off and he needs to figure out how to consistently contribute to the Canadiens and help them win games.

The Canadiens powrerplay - It had climbed all the way up to second in the league but in the past three games the Canadiens powerplay has been anemic at best. They once again look disorganized and uninspired. However, Kirk Muller has proven time and time again that he is able to fix the Canadiens play with the man advantage and it will not be long until it is going again. Unfortunately, it seems as though the Canadiens cannot have both special teams units going well at the same time…

Nathan Beaulieu - The Mr. Hyde version of Beaulieu has once again come out as he has seemingly lost his confidence, despite still playing alongside Jeff Petry. The duo once again had difficulty against the Washington Capitals, on the ice for both of their even strength goals. Beaulieu is allowing too much space between himself and the opposing skater with the puck. He is too dependent on Carey Price making every save. Beaulieu needs to close that gap and have a much more active stick. Against the Oilers on Sunday he had four giveaways in the game. Beaulieu is making it easy for the coaches to take away some of his minutes as he lost his spot on the top powerplay unit to Andrei Markov. He still played over 19 minutes against the Oilers. The Canadiens need him to regain his confidence as soon as possible.

The Canadiens will hit the road as they visit the Colorado Avalanche and former teammate Mark Barberio on Tuesday. The Canadiens embarrassed the Avalanche with a 10-1 victory back in December. The Avalanche will likely want to avenge that loss and so the Canadiens cannot afford to take the game lightly, despite going up against the worst team in the league. The rumours regarding the Canadiens and Matt Duchene have been incessant as of late. They will likely only intensify with the teams facing each other on Tuesday….
