On Noesen's impact, why Hall is due for a 5v5 scoring bump, and more

    1) Stefan Noesen is looking like a better addition for the Devils by the day. He has played in just five games thus far but has chipped in with a couple goals and used his size very effectively on the forecheck, in the cycle game, and around the net.

His on-ice numbers are good -- the Devils have out-chanced their opponents 22-19 (53.66%) with Noesen out there at full-strength -- and he is one of the few on the roster who doesn't hesitate to shoot the puck. Including his 12 games with the Anaheim Ducks, Noesen is averaging nine shots on goal per 60 minutes of 5v5 play. The only player on the Devils ahead of Noesen in that regard is Taylor Hall so his willingness, and ability, to get pucks on net is certainly welcome.

    2) Speaking of Hall, he is due for a little puck luck. Hall is one of 40 forwards with 100+ shots at 5v5 and he has just four goals to show for it. The other 39 forwards have at least five 5v5 goals and only Hall (3.83%), Patrice Bergeron (3.65%), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (4.63%), Jakub Voracek (4.81%), Corey Perry (4.9%), Nathan MacKinnon (5.83%) and Patric Hornqvist (5.98%) are shooting below 6%.

Hall scored on at least 8.4% of his 5v5 shots in five of his last six seasons prior to this one so, unless he left his shooting talent in Edmonton, it seems likely he'll fill the net with more regularity going forward. That's good news for a Devils team that ranks 28th in goals per game.

    3) John Moore could return to the lineup when the Devils return from their bye Sunday afternoon. While his play leaves a lot to be desired without the puck, he is one of the few players on the back end capable of producing offense and skating/moving the puck up ice. The Devils have really struggled breaking the puck out of the defensive zone and Moore should help them out in that aspect.

    4) How crazy is it that Mike Cammalleri has scored once in his last 30 games(!) yet he's still on pace for 17 goals and better than 50 points? Many have gotten on him for his goal scoring woes, and deservedly so, but he's still putting together a pretty solid offensive season.

    5) The Devils have a minus-26 goal differential, good for last in the conference, and sit just three points behind the Philadelphia Flyers for the final Wild Card spot. At the same time, they are just four points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who sit in the basement of the East. What a strange season this has been.
