Bizarre Blues look to build on road shutouts vs Leafs

The Blues continued their perfect road trip on Tuesday, beating the Senators 6-0. Unlike prior victories, the Blues did much better in the advanced statistics with 8 skaters beating the 50% 5v5 corsi % and none being worse than 36%.

Kenny Agostino was again impressive, registering an assist and five shots on goal just under 13 minutes of ice time. Ivan Barbashev scored his first NHL goal and Magnus Paajarvi celebrated his return to the NHL with a high speed, high skill game winning goal. Jake Allen stopped all 30 shots, still moving too much but playing better overall.

The game was just another example of the Jeykll & Hyde bizzaro world that has been the Blues season. The shutout pushed the Blues overall shutout streak to 120 minutes, the Blues goalies’ shutout streak to almost 148 minutes, the team’s road shutout streak to almost 138 minutes, and gave them shutouts in 3 of their last 4 road games.
In their 8 wins of 2017, they have a 0.75 goals against average. In their 9 2017 losses, they have 5.11 goals against average. More recently, their 3 February wins sport a 0.33 goals against average.

Interestingly enough, the Blues have a positive 0.25 average goal differential against the Eastern Conference this season while a negative 0.40 average goal differential against the West with their worst average coming against their own division at negative 0.50.
Blues forwards have been very streaky. Robby Fabbri has scored all of his 11 goals in only two months. Colton Parayko also has only scored in two months. Patrik Berglund has 10 of his 12 goals all in two months. Jaden Schwartz has 11 of his 13 in two months. Alexander Steen has 8 of his 10 in two months.

More odd things? Who would have guessed that a new coach would face the same non-conference team twice in his first give games? Mike Yeo will be coaching his 2nd game against the Leafs tonight. Two out of his five games with the Blues will have been against the Leafs. Yeo will end up facing 6 Eastern Conference teams (7 games) before he faces a Western Conference team. Even more bizarre, he will have coached almost a month, 10 games, before facing a Central division team and will only have faced one Western conference team in that span.

As the Blues take on the Leafs in Toronto tonight, the Leafs sit in 3rd place in the Atlantic, trying to hold off Boston and Florida as 4th place in the Atlantic could easily miss the playoffs. The Leafs are 13-8-3 at home and will be looking to avenge their 5-1 loss of a week ago. They are 2-0-1 in their last 3 games and have won two in a row at home.
With a Blues win and a Predators loss, the Blues can move into 3rd place in the Central. They want to keep inching their road record to .500 as they are 10-13-1 coming into tonight’s game.

The Leafs are the 6th highest scoring team in the league but are 9th worst in goals against. Their scoring is partially a result of their 2nd best power play. They can’t blame their goals against on their 8th best penalty kill as it’s likely more a result of allowing the 4th most shots against per game.

As far as the lineup, expect the Blues to roll the following lines out tonight with Gunnarsson going in for Bortuzzo:
    Steen – Stastny –Tarasenko
    Agostino – Lehtera - Perron
    Schwartz – Berglund – Paajarvi
    Upshall – Barbashev – Reaves
    Bouwmeester –Pietrangelo
    Gunnarsson – Shattenkirk
    Edmundson - Parayko
    Allen

It’s a great day for hockey.

Fellow Hockeybuzz bloggers Nashville Predator's Paul McCannWinnipeg Jet's Peter Tessier and Minnesota Wild's Dan Wallace have generously agreed to a friendly charity wager. We were hoping to do the whole division but don't have it fully represented yet. The blogger whose team finishes the highest the standings at the end of the year gets to pick a charity to whom the others donate in their name.
