Shafaq News / Forests Police Department in Khanaqin revealed on Thursday, a decrease in illegal poaching of rare wild animals within its borders by 98%, and confirmed arresting 600 hunters who have hunted illegally on the outskirts of the district during the current year.

Forests Police department was opened in Khanaqin after the fall of the former regime in 2003, it is subjected to the administration and the authority of the Forest Police Directorate of Kurdistan Region.

“There are night and day detachments from police forests to protect animals and prevent hunting operations as that has contributed to the return of rare animals as deer , wild birds and other animals to their habitats in Khanaqin ,” The police chief of forests in Khanaqin Colonel , Mohammed Suleiman told “Shafaq News”.

Iran-Iraq war in the eighties of the last century caused the migration of the majority of rare and wild animals from Khanaqin to other areas.

He added that the forests police managed according to organized plans to revive the prairie environment and bring it back to its previous shape, calling on residents to cooperate with the forests police detachments and report any illegal hunting.
