At least 21 people were killed and at least 40 wounded Sunday in an explosion targeting the church of Mary Girgis in Tanta, capital of the western province of Gharbia.
Ambulances moved to the site of the accident, and injured and victims of the hospital, while the security forces combed the area.
"The blast took place inside the church during the prayer," said the governor of Gharbia, Major General Ahmed Deif. Security sources said the explosion was caused by a high explosive device placed in the first row inside the church.
A high-level security source in the Interior Ministry confirmed that an explosive device exploded inside the church in Tanta, resulting in the victims.
The security source pointed out that the immediate transfer of explosives experts and civil protection and the imposition of a security cordon around the church, pointing out that the explosives experts are currently combing the perimeter of the church to make sure there are no other explosive devices.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered the opening of army hospitals to treat the wounded.
The explosion comes in conjunction with the Christian festivals of Palm Sunday, which authorities imposed in conjunction with strict security measures, especially in the vicinity of churches, and also comes 10 days before a visit by the Pope to Egypt on April 28 and 29.
For his part, said the director of the truth center for political and strategic studies, Emile Amin that "the explosion is not only targeting Christians, but targeted all Egyptians."
The head of the Evangelical community, Pastor André Zaki, said that "the terrorist explosion, which took place in the church in Tanta, is cowardly and despicable, because to intimidate the worshipers is contrary to religious and human values."
"The terrorists are trying to strike Egypt, but we are committed to our unity and our country and will not discourage us from standing with our country," said Rev. Zaki.
