Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) did not agree on Tuesday to impose new sanctions on Russia over a chemical attack by the Moscow-backed Syrian regime in Khan Sheikun, Idlib province.
Commenting on a proposal from his British counterpart, Boris Johnson, additional sanctions were imposed on Syrian officials or Russian officials. "At present, there is no agreement on new sanctions as an effective tool," Alfano said at a news conference.
Johnson had presented a meeting of foreign ministers of the seven countries with a proposal to impose sanctions on Russia, given the role of Moscow in support of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad at all levels.
Johnson said after the introduction of the sanctions proposal, there is a need to punish officers in the Russian army because of their work with the Assad regime.
Johnson said sanctions against Moscow would push it to pressure Assad to bring him back to the negotiating table.
